Honey Halva Latte (Tatte Bakery Copycat)

A quick and healthy latte that tastes like Baklava! The combination of honey and cardamom recreate a magical cup of coffee I tried at Tatte Bakery on my last trip to Washington DC.

Last year when I visited Washington DC, I came across the best bakery I’ve ever been to – Tatte Bakery & Cafe. Their unique Middle Eastern-inspired menu featured the Honey Halva Latte with Cardamom that kind of tasted like Baklava. It was subtly sweet with hints of vanilla and nuttiness. Sadly, I live hours away from the closest one, so I had to make my own copycat version to recapture that magic!

A Unique Marriage

Growing up in an Indian house, I ate of lot of sweet dishes flavored with cardamom. Some of my favorites among these were gulab jamun, payasam, kheer and kulfi. It’s such a shame that many western cuisines haven’t experimented with cardamom because it truly so comforting in my opinion. Although we typically pair the cardamom with sugar in Indian cuisine, it is more often paired with honey in the Middle East in sweet dishes like Baklava. The unique combination is nothing sort of amazing!

Why Cardamom?

Many consider cardamom to be the queen of all spices because of its medicinal properties and its use in the flavoring of dishes since early times in history. It is also the third most expensive spice in the world, following vanilla and saffron. There are two types of cardamom: green and black. Green cardamom is typically used a lot in middle eastern cuisine and Indian cuisine, particularly in sweet dishes. This is due to its slightly sweet flavor as opposed to the black cardamom that tends to have a more smoky, pungent flavor.

Cardamom Substitution

Cardamom has a complex flavor so it’s hard to create an exact match for it. Although the flavor of cardamom cannot be exactly replicated, you can try using other spices to enhance similar flavors. One replacement I’ve used is 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg for every one 1 teaspoon of cardamom.

Don’t Drink Coffee?

If you are someone who dislikes coffee, you can replace it with black tea. This will create a delicious Honey & Cardamom Iced Chai instead! Make sure to use a strongly brewed black tea or chai instead of the tea bags.

Make It Vegan

Although the Honey Halva Latte is usually made with whole milk, you can swap it out according to your preferences (almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, etc). Similarly, you can swap the honey for maple syrup or sugar, but it will change the flavor profile slightly.

Pair this with Snickerdoodle Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies!
