Nimbu Pani Margarita (Indian Cocktail)

When it comes to refreshing summer drinks, nothing beats the freshness of nimbu pani. This Indian cocktail is a tequila twisted take on the classic Indian limeade, made with fresh limes and packs a sweet, tangy punch. This is the ultimate Indian cocktail recipe for all your needs this summer — bold, flavour and super easy to make.

Why You’ll Love This

  • Simple ingredients you already have at home. Ever find a cocktail recipe you really want to try only to realise you don’t own half the stuff? All you need for this Nimbu Pani Indian Margarita is some fresh limes, sugar, tequila and optionally chaat masala!
  • Perfect blend of sweet, salty & tangy. Unlike a basic lime margarita, this Indian cocktail brings a layered flavor profile that stays with you after your last sip. The zing from the lime, smooth sweetness from the sugar and je ne sais quod from the chaat masala give you a well balanced flavor profile.
  • Totally customizable. Want to turn this into a Spicy Indian Margarita? Add a tajin rom or thinly sliced green chilies. Prefer it a little more fizzy? Use a club soda instead of water for the nimbu pani. This Indian cocktail is a margarita that’s super forgiving and easy to riff on based on who you’re serving.

What exactly is Nimbu Pani?

Nimbu pani is India’s answer to lemonade, but way better in my opinion. It’s a refreshing drink make this fresh lime juice, water, sugar and a pinch of salt. Some versions also include mint, cumin, black salt or even chilies. I personally like a standard nimbi pani because it’s sweet and the ultimate summer cooler as is.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Fresh Lime, if you can get your hands on key limes then I would also highly recommend those for limes closer to the flavor profile of Indian limes
  • Tequila Blanco, my favorite is undoubtedly Espolon for margaritas!
  • White granulated sugar, you don’t need the fancy stuff. Basic is best!
  • Tiny pinch of chaat masala to balance out the drink.
  • Fresh Mint Leaves

Variations to Try

Once you’ve got this classic nimbu pani margarita locked in, you can mess around with it to make the Indians cocktail of your liking!

  • Spicy Margarita : if you want to make an Indian Spicy margarita, you can use this base recipe and throw in some thinly sliced jalapeños, or muddling some green chilis. Alternatively, you could also do a Kashmiri chili power run mixed with Tajin!
  • Smoky Margarita : Swap the tequila out for mezcal
  • Indian Style Mango Margarita : If there’s one Indian cocktail all Indians are down for, it’s a mango margarita. You an add a few spoons of mango pulp to this base margarita to make an Indian Mango Margarita or throw in some muddled berries.

Can I Make this without Alcohol?

Totally! Traditional nimbu pant is made without alcohol, just skip the tequila and you’ve got a refreshing spiced Indian limeade (aka nimbu pani). You can even make it more of an Indian mocktail vibe by throwing in a splash of club soda for fizz.

Why does chaat masala work in Indian Cocktails?

Chaat masala is a tangy spice that pairs so perfectly with lime and accentuates the sweet lime to make for a really well balanced Indian cocktail that’s easy to drink. The black salt, dried mango powder and cumin powder in chaat masala are all classic ingredients in a street style nimbu pani. When added to cocktails, it brightens the drink ip with some acidity and earthiness! It makes the Indian margarita a little more Indian-y!
