Description

If you’re looking for a beautiful centerpiece for your holiday party table this is the one! With the flaky layers of paratha and spicy onion filling inspired by Hyderabadi onion samosas, this dish is perfect for your holiday table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Kawan Parathas
  • 1–2 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp fennel seeds
  • 2 white onions, chopped
  • 1 small spoon ginger-garlic paste (or just some minced ginger + minced garlic)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tbsp red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp chaat masala powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • Green chilies (optional)
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Put your frozen kawan parathas out to soften a bit while you make the filling.
  2. Add 2 tbsp ghee to a saucepan and add cumin seeds & fennel seeds. Toast for 10-15 seconds and add in all your chopped onions, salt, ginger and garlic. Mix really well to combine and sauté on medium until the onions really soften and starts to brown. It takes around 6-8 minutes.
  3. Add in the red chili powder, turmeric, garam masala, chaat masala and cumin powder. If you want it extra spicy you can add chopped green chilis but I don’t. Mix well and cook until it becomes a bit jammy or looks like the final product in this video.
  4. Assembly the Tree (refer to this video): Now for the tree, do all the assembly on the baking tray with a parchment sheet under. put down your first paratha and roll it out slightly. Cut it into a cone shape as show on the video on my instagram. Then spoon on the filling, and place the second paratha on top. Cut that into the same cone shape.. Now cut slits as shown in the video and twist each one up. I also make a small start with the scraps and put that on top.
  5. Add an egg to a bowl and beat well. Brush I this all over the top of the tree.
  6. Bake at 420 degrees until golden brown.
