What You’ll Need
- Fat Free Feta Cheese : for this whipped feta, I would recommend using a block of feta instead of crumbled feta. Crumbled feta usually has ingredients that prevent all the cheese from clumping together, so it can make the final result less creamy.
- Cottage Cheese : In feel like cottage cheese seems to have a bad rep for it’s texture, but once you blend it up cottage cheese really doesn’t taste that different from ricotta cheese!
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil : blending the cheeses with a little bit of olive oil is going to make this extra creamy!
- Fresh Lemon Juice : this is going to be very subtle but really wake up the flavor of the dish.

What feta cheese should you use for whipped feta?
For whipped feta cheese, you ideally want to use a whole block of feta cheese – the kind that is sold in a liquid brine. The liquid bring keeps the moisture of the feta on the higher side, and therefore make it more creamy. However, my grocery stores don’t sell it like this, so I usually just get a whole block not packed in brine! The one thing I will say is don’t try to use feta crumbles if you want it to come out fluffy! Feta crumbles, and most shredded/crumbled cheese have extra ingredients to avoid everything clumping together. The crumbles are typically drier result in a more grainy dip.
Why do I use cottage cheese in this recipe?
In many whipped cheeses, you’ll see heavy cream or ricotta cheese added in to add a little bit of fat to the dish and really cream it all together. Since I use fat free feta cheese, I like to introduce the fat with a little bit of olive oil and 1% cottage cheese. I prefer cottage cheese over ricotta cheese as it gets a lot creamier due to the liquid and had better macros for me.

How to Make Whipped Feta
Making this whipped feta dip is so simple to make. Let’s break it down.
- Add the feta cheese, cottage cheese, olive oil, lemon juice and a pinch of salt to a food processor. Blend until everything is very well blended and creamy, with not lumps.
- Spread it on a plate or spoon it into a bowl and top with honey, chopped pistachios and if you would like, red chili flakes.
Pairing the dip with honey & pistachios
Feta Cheese is very versatile and pairs well with a lot of flavors, since it strikes a really nice balance without overpowering any one flavor. Feta can be a little tangy, so honey really balanced that well as a sort of sweet and salty combo that wake up the taste buds. Then, topping it with salty, chopped pistachios really elevates the flavour of the dish.
You can definitely play around with the toppings based on what you’re feeling! Feta also pairs great with a sour balsamic vinegar, savoury garlic chips, bitter arugula, toasty sesame seeds or spicy red chili flakes!
